Bring an item letter wheel

Spin the wheel, get a letter, and everyone has to turn up with something beginning with it. No two players can bring the same thing, so the easy ones go fast. Free, and you can drop the letters nobody wants.

The rules of Bring an item

  • Spin the wheel for a letter and tell the squad what it landed on.
  • Everyone has to bring one item beginning with that letter to the next session.
  • No two players can bring the same thing, so the obvious ones go to whoever claims them first.
  • There is no rush. Anyone who forgets can bring theirs the week after.
  • Turn up empty handed and it is a forfeit, straight into the kitty.

Which letters to leave in

All twenty six are on the wheel by default. Most squads take Q, X and Z off, because there are only so many quiches, xylophones and zebra print onesies to go round before it stops being funny.

Delete a letter from the entries box and it is gone from the wheel. If you have already done a letter this season, take it out so you do not land on it twice. Some clubs go the other way and leave only the hard letters in, which turns the whole thing into a much crueller game.

Why it works so well

It is the rare challenge that pulls in everyone rather than just the usual two or three who join in. There is no skill to it, no cost, and the fun is entirely in what people decide counts as a valid item.

It also runs itself. One spin sets the whole week up, the group chat does the rest arguing over whether a photograph of a giraffe counts as a giraffe, and you have a story that outlives the season.

Keeping track of who brought what

The wheel gives you the letter. The bit that gets messy is remembering who claimed what and who turned up with nothing, which is exactly what the Fine Club app handles: it spins the letter, logs every item so there are no duplicates, and turns anyone who forgot straight into a fine on the leaderboard.

FAQ

Questions about the wheel

What is the Bring an item challenge?

A squad game. You spin a random letter and every player has to bring something beginning with that letter to training or match day. No two people can bring the same item, and anyone who turns up without one takes a forfeit.

Can I take letters off the wheel?

Yes. Delete any line in the entries box and that letter disappears from the wheel. Most teams remove Q, X and Z, and take out any letter they have already used.

Does the item have to be a real object?

That is up to your squad, and arguing about it is half the point. The usual rule is that it has to be a physical thing you can hand over, which rules out the lad who tries to claim his mate Kevin.

How long do people get?

Most clubs run it to the next session. There is no hard deadline in the game itself, so anyone who forgets can bring theirs the following week rather than being written off.

What happens if someone forgets?

It is a forfeit. Traditionally that means a fine into the team kitty, which is why so many squads run the challenge and the fines together.
